A bit of a side note but I liked this...... Hawkes Bay winery makes a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, sends said Sauvignon Blanc to Hawkes Bay girl, who lives in Marlborough...
Let’s set the scene - January, camping in the Marlborough Sounds, hot day, tired kids, and exhausted grownups! Sounds like hell but thanks to some great friends, also camping (but with a boat) the day was saved - a bucket of scallops was given to us fresh from the sea and still in the shell.
If this ever happens to you the must thing to do is crack open a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc - Kate Radburnd’s 2011 was our drink of choice.
The scallops were cooked with butter and lemon and a 'small' splash from my glass! A small splash because this wine is delicious.
The colour in the glass is just like the dry hills around Marlborough - dry tussock would be the paint chart description. Oh and please forgive me, given my previous glass rant, but it was in plastic...
Fresh and vibrant aromas, noticeably gooseberries and cut grass which are so synonymous to Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. There was also a lovely a citrus twist.
The palate had a gooseberry tang with lemon and lime notes. These balanced out with subtle tropical fruit characters of passionfruit and melon. It’s a fairly dry wine but not in a mouth puckering way, it was crisp and refreshing and served chilled was just perfect.
When combined with the fresh scallops the palate was luscious and tantalizing and the finish lingered well into a lovely balmy night.
